CLIMATE JUSTICE: HELP BAYVIEW HUNTERS POINT, TREASURE ISLAND & RICHMOND RESIDENTS
The Climate Justice Planning Group on Radioactive Waste and BIPOC Resilience in Bayview Hunters Point, Treasure Island and Richmond Waterfront Neighborhoods (“Planning Group”) continues to expand its efforts and coalition building around issues that have plagued residents with exceptionally high rates of asthma and cancer for decades, and in Bayview Hunters Point since World War II.
The Planning Group is representing the Chapter in a coalition of environmental justice and climate activists and organizations from around the SF Bay Area who are seeking to:
Halt construction by Lennar Development in the Bayview and Treasure Island
Stop a planned waterfront development in the city of Richmond on a contaminated site
Lobby city, state and EPA officials who with a few exceptions have ignored the problems
Develop a website and digital organizing tools
Working with this coalition, which includes a wide range of neighborhood, climate, housing and health activists, is a real-world example of the power of intersectionality. Any members who are looking to impact climate justice, protect the waterfront, repair broken systems of housing, healthcare and economic development are strongly encouraged to join us.
If you’re looking for a way to learn about and connect with other Chapter members on a real-time, live, local environmental justice issue that is directly related to the climate crisis, please join us! A virtual town hall is being planned by the coalition for early this summer - stay tuned for date!
The Planning Group meets the third Wednesday of every month, 5:30- 6:30 p.m. For more information, please contact Alma Soongi Beck, Climate Justice Co-Chair, almasoongi@gmail.com, and Matt Levine, Climate Justice Team Member, levinetown@gmail.com.
