PLASTIC FREE JULY 2022

On June 30, Governor Newsom signed legislation cutting harmful plastic pollution to protect communities, oceans and animals.

“Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 54, requiring all packaging in the state to be recyclable or compostable by 2032, cutting plastic packaging by 25 percent in 10 years and requiring 65 percent of all single-use plastic packaging to be recycled in the same timeframe."

What is Plastic Free July? Plastic-Free July is an annual event that began in Western Australia in 2011 and has spread across the globe. It aims to raise awareness of the amount of plastic in our lives by encouraging people to reduce their reliance on single-use plastic disposables, reduce plastic pollution, and push for lasting solutions to the plastic pollution crisis during the month of July and beyond.

Why should you reduce plastic use? For one, plastic pollution is off the charts. The amount of waste produced each year is over 400 million tonnes, with a forecast of 1,100 million tonnes by 2050. Pollution from both the creation and disposal of plastics is harmful to our world ecosystems, marine life, and is hazardous to our health.

This month, millions of people will be reducing their plastic waste. Plastic Free July is a global movement that helps people become a part of the solution to plastic pollution to help create cleaner streets, oceans, and beautiful communities.

Be a part of Plastic Free July by choosing to refuse single-use plastics

Plastic Free July provides resources and ideas to help people around the world reduce single-use plastic waste everyday at home, work, school, and even at your local cafes. The movement has inspired over 120 million participants across 177 countries. Collectively, making a small change can make a massive difference in our communities. And being a part of Plastic Free July can help find new alternatives that can become good habits forever.
