“It’s time for businesses to start playing a larger role in fighting the world’s most pressing problems, like climate change.”

“A Message From the CEO” -  Chip Bergh, President & CEO, Levi Strauss & Co.

Levi Strauss & Co. takes responsibility for the social and environmental footprint of their products and operations. They believe in doing right by the places where we all live and work and has the desire to lead the industry in seeking solutions to our most pressing issues.

In 2019, the company set ambitious targets across four key sustainability focus areas: water, climate, chemicals and people. And they are sharing best practices and what they learn to influence the clothing industry.

Climate change is one of the primary issues that Levi Strauss has been committed to, continuing to meet and exceed goals to reduce their own impact on the world.  In 2012, they set three goals to meet by 2020 to lessen their impact on climate change impact, which they have since exceeded. They were:

  • 25% reduction in GHG emissions (offices, retail and distribution);

  • 5% annual reduction in GHG emissions per product shipped from owned-and-operated manufacturing facilities; and

  • 20% of energy purchased from renewable sources for all owned-and-operated facilities.

Levi Strauss met and exceeded these goals in 2017 by:

  • using 20% renewable energy;

  • investing in LED lighting at retail locations, distribution centers and manufacturing facilities; and

  • prioritizing energy efficiency.

After reaching their previous goals, the company committed to setting science-based targets as part of their actions to address climate change, and are aligned with the international Paris Agreement. The latest goals set forth as part of their new Climate Action Strategy (all SBTi-approved GHG emissions reduction targets) are as follows:

  • 90% absolute reduction in GHG emissions in all owned-and-operated facilities

  • 100% renewable electricity in all owned-and-operated facilities

  • 40% absolute reduction in GHG emissions across their global supply chain

As Climate Reality Leaders in the Bay Area, we should all be proud to have a local company like Levi Strauss leading the way for their industry. As Chip Bergh says:

“Nothing less than the health and well-being of the communities where we live and work are at stake.”
